Green Lantern is a mantle held by several characters in the DC Comics universe, each empowered by a power ring and a Lantern battery. These rings grant the wearer incredible abilities, including flight, energy constructs, and force fields, limited only by the user's willpower and imagination.
The most well-known Green Lantern is likely Hal Jordan. A former test pilot, Jordan was chosen by a dying alien Green Lantern, Abin Sur, to inherit his ring. He became a member of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic police force tasked with maintaining order throughout the universe. He patrolled Sector 2814, which includes Earth.
Other notable Green Lanterns include John Stewart, an architect and former Marine; Guy Gardner, known for his brash personality; and Kyle Rayner, an artist who briefly possessed the last Green Lantern ring after the Corps' near destruction. More recently, Jessica Cruz, a character who struggled with anxiety, has also become a prominent Green Lantern.
Green Lanterns draw their power from the emotional spectrum, with green representing willpower. Their oath, recited as they charge their rings, emphasizes their commitment to fighting evil and upholding justice: "In brightest day, in blackest night, No evil shall escape my sight. Let those who worship evil's might, Beware my power, Green Lantern's light!"
